The CEO of Peace and Love Hospital and project advisory Board Member of the Meals for Non-Communicable Disease (Meals4NCDs), Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai has described the rapid rise in overweight, obesity and Non-Communicable Diseases among children and adolescents in the country is due to the nature and extent of unhealthy foods and non-alcoholic carbonated beverages sold and consumed in schools and shops across the country.

Dr Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, who spoke to Angel news during the launch of the Meals4NCDs Project stated that the project is to provide measures, evaluation, accountability and leadership support for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) prevention in the diets of children.

She also bemoaned the Gh¢ 1.00 per child for feeding children under the school feeding program, stating that the amount is woefully inadequate to provide a proper diet for the children in public schools. These meals according to her if not properly balanced can result in children suffering from NCDs.

“What I am saying is that countries which are more advanced have realized that the consumption of too much sweet and sugar contained drink has resulted in the high numbers of obesity in their children and as a developing country, we need to take immediate steps to curb this now and not repeat the mistakes they made. We have an opportunity to learn and be better and that’s what this project is in to do”, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai said.

Dr. Wiafe Addai further called on law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies to be more proactive in monitoring these items on the market and impose appropriate sanctions on importers and manufacturers who break the law on standards.

She also called on parents to be mindful of what children take in and limit the consumption of sweets by children in order to avoid obesity and the prevalence of NCDs.
