Modern Ghana sued in 1m cedi defamatory suit

Member of Parliament for Efuttu constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has sued Modern Ghana and four others at the Accra High Court in a defamation suit.

The suit, filled yesterday September 10, percent 2019 was against Alhasan Salifu Bawah, a lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Jogobu Company Limited, Modern Ghana .com, Emmanuel Ajafor Abugri, editor of modern Ghana and Bright Owusu Adansi, a reporter of Modern Ghana as first, second, third, fourth and fifth respondents respectively.

In the suit, the Member of Parliament, who doubles as Board Chairman of Ghana Water Company Limited referred to several articles published on separate dates and the content of which he alleges are defamatory and delebrately published to malign and tarnish his image.

In said publications according to copies of the suit available to, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin claims that “Plaintiff further averts that the defendants in the same publication published that “how much Afenyo-Markin allegedly bribed one of the detained journalist to retract his earlier claim of torture will be aparant in the not too distant future, just like Afenyo-Markin’s offer of a bribe of GHc 60,00.00 to some UTAG National Executives earlier this year to issue disgraceful press statements, that leaked in a matter of days.”

The Member of Parliament in the suit is praying the court to compel the defendants to compensate him with an order directing the defendants to publish an unqualified apology through the same medium which the said defamatory articles were earlier published. Hon. Afenyo-Markin further seeks a perpetual injunction refraining defendants from further publishing defamatory articles against him and demands general damages to the tune of a million cedis against all defendants.
