The NPP is advised to make critical decisions based on the outcome of the 2020 Elections in terms of appointments. Let me appeal to the President Elect – H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who has the powers to decide, to consider the following as my humble input.
How do we (NPP) make parliamentary governance smooth and therefore who should be considered for the position of Speaker of Parliament?
It is undisputed fact that Ghana’ 8th Parliament of the fourth Republic is a split one, if not equal halves then a slim majority in the favour of the NPP.
This means unity and compromise is the way forward in handling the situation. This will require Leadership teams and experienced personalities from both the NPP and NDC, such as the Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah- Bonsu, Hon. Huruna Iddrissu, Hon. Joe Osei-Wusu and Hon. Muntaka as to mention few, to handle the floor of Parliament.
In this light, the qualities of the chosen Speaker is at stake. It should be borne out of the following:
▪ Experience and Competence
NPP requires an experience and competent with a track person. A Speaker who is respected by both sides of the political divide, capable of dealing with the composition and issues of this new parliament.
▪ Tribal and Regional balance of Executives and Legislature.
History has on record about, Hon. Speaker Peter Allan Agyetey during Ex. President J. A Kufour era, when he was replaced and the effect it had on NPP and it’s support base in Ga state. Now flipping through Ga and Adangbe in the top hierarchy, the numbers has shrunk by virtue of lost MPs in the Region.
I am hereby proposing to H.E the President of the Republic – Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to consider the above and re-appoint Hon. Rt. Rev Prof. Mike Oquaye as the Speaker of Parliament.
