Story by Dominic Ghansah
The whole nation was thrown into a state of shock when two teenagers in Lamptey Mills, a suburb of Kasoa, allegedly gruesomely murdered a 10-year-old boy for money rituals.
Kasoa for some time now has been in the spotlight as a fertile ground for so many criminal activities ranging from armed robbery, land guards activities, and frequent murder cases. However, the murder of the 10-year-old Ishmael Mensah Abdallah by his teenage friends has broken the back of the camel and has gotten the whole nation talking about the issue and the possible root causes.
According to the deceased’s father, the two teenage boys, Felix Nyarko, 16, and Nicholas Kiki, 18 usually visited his house to watch TV and play with the deceased. It is therefore heartbreaking that these boys could mastermind the killing of his son.
Angry Ghanaians who took to social media and other platforms to express their dismay have attributed the rampant murder and other criminal activities to the porous nature of security in the Municipality, thus making the area a haven for these criminals.
Kasoa is in the Awutu Senya East Municipality in the Central Region and is the largest and one of the fastest-growing towns in the region.
The pace of development comes with its security challenges, along with the lack of adequate security for residents within the Municipality.
Security personnel have to manage inadequate logistics available to them to fight crime in the municipality.
The overstretched nature of their resource, coupled with the densely populated nature of the area makes it rather more difficult for them to discharge their duties effectively.
For these reasons, some concerned citizens in the Municipality as well as some well-meaning Ghanaians are calling on the government to take a second look at the security situation in Kasoa to help curb criminal activities in the area.
The two teenagers are currently being held in police custody, waiting to reappear in court on the 20th of May, 2021.
The remains of Ishmael Mensah Abdellah have finally been put to rest, whilst the family waits to see the wheels of justice grind exceedingly fine.
