Breakfast is often called ‘the most important meal of the day’, and for good reason. As the name suggests, breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period. It replenishes your supply of glucose to boost your energy levels and alertness, while also providing other essential nutrients required for good health.

Many studies have shown the health benefits of eating breakfast. It improves your energy levels and ability to concentrate in the short term, and can help with better weight management, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in the long term.

Despite the benefits of breakfast for your health and wellbeing, many people often skip it, for a variety of reasons. The good news is there are plenty of ways to make it easier to fit breakfast into your day.

Breakfast literally means “to break the fast.” It is the first meal of the day after a stretch of not eating overnight.

Breakfast earned its title as the most important meal of the day back in the 1960s after American nutritionist Adelle Davis suggested that to keep fit and avoid obesity, one should “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.”

Though around 15% of people in the world regularly skip breakfast, many still believe it to be the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides the body with important nutrients, to start the day feeling energized and nourished. Many also believe that it can promote weight loss. The points listed below are the reason why  Breakfast is important;

1. It encourages healthier eating

Breakfast helps you reach your daily recommended servings of fruit and vegetables. Those who eat breakfast also tend to consume more milk and whole grains than those who skip the meal. And as you probably know, milk offers up important calcium for your body. It also fills your stomach, helping you to avoid overeating and snacking later in the day.

2. It balances blood sugar levels

Eating in the morning helps your body better break down glucose, also called blood sugar. In fact, you can avoid glucose fluctuations throughout the day by eating fruit, grains, and lean protein within two hours of waking.

3.Lower your diabetes risk

One observational study found people who skipped breakfast four to five days a week had as much as a 55% increased risk for Type 2 diabetes.

Be mindful of what ends up on your breakfast plate or breakfast bowl, though. Sugary cereals or traditional breakfast fare, such as donuts, muffins, waffles, pancakes and bagels, can be high in sugar, starch or fat.

4.Reduce brain fog

Your brain needs fuel to function. Breakfast can help you be more alert, focused and happy. (Just don’t overdo it on the coffee, which can lead to a crash later in the day.)

It’s particularly important for children to feed their minds at breakfast. Studies show kids who eat in the morning are better able to pay attention at school, resulting in improved academic performance.
